What Actually Drives Software Development Costs

Aus TerraDuniaWiki

The dominant factor is rarely the choice of framework — it is how much is still undecided. Every open question in the specification is converted into a buffer inside the number you receive. A vendor node js development services that has no visibility into the edge cases has to assume the worst. Investing a few days in requirements work often reduces the final cost by far more than negotiating the rate.

Connections to other systems are the second big multiplier. A form that saves data is predictable; the same screen connected to a legacy ERP is a different problem. The cost hides in the other system: rate limits and sandbox access, waiting on someone else's team, inconsistent data. Ask any vendor to break integrations out as separate items, as this is where estimates break.

The requirements nobody writes down can easily double the budget. A tool used by twenty people has almost nothing in common with the same functionality serving a hundred thousand users. Compliance work, uptime targets, performance under load, traceability and multi-language support all add real engineering time. Write them down at the start or you can expect them to arrive later as change requests.

The mix of people behind the number matters. A day rate tells you little on its own: one senior nextjs development company developer at a higher rate frequently turns out to be cheaper overall than two inexperienced developers who need heavy code review. Ask as well which is better rest or graphql roles are billed: delivery management, quality assurance, infrastructure work and UX design are legitimate costs, but they must be visible in the estimate.

The quoted figure is never the total cost. Budget for hosting, subscriptions and licences, logging and alerting and a maintenance allowance annually. A reasonable rule of thumb holds that software in active use requires a recurring percentage of the original budget every year in fixes, updates and small changes. Ignoring this remains the classic mistake.
